Farfield Mill /Gavel

Sunday, the 7th of September was forecast to be a rather dreary day, both cold and rainy.  Nevertheless, the undaunted Burnley and Pendle MGOC – and their guests Steve and Janet –  set off for Ireby Farm and the mandatory coffee and cakes.  I did, however, notice the odd bacon butty sneaking its devious way in …  The coffee stop was preparatory to our drive to Sedbergh and Farfield Mill.  Mick and our Leader had plotted a fine rural route from Burnley and Pendle HQ – The Old Stone Trough Hotel – taking us to Gisburn but then cutting into the beautiful lanes via Paythorne and thence Wigglesworth and Rathmell.  Delightfully untroubled by traffic, and with the weather starting to defy the forecast, we got to admire the early autumn tints on our way to the main road and Ireby.  After our stop, we drove to Kirkby Lonsdale — turning right — taking the course of the river Lune and the gently scenic Lune Valley, where every bend revealed a lovely new vista, to Sedbergh.  Farfield Mill is a spectacular combination of historical woollen mill, art gallery and display of local craft wares for sale.  But our visit there had a special poignancy for this Club.  As we reported previously, Enid, and later David Knagg a founder, both loyal and staunch supporters of many years, had recently both passed away.  Helen Carter – David’s daughter – and Christopher Knagg decided to present the club with a new and rather beautiful oak gavel to commemorate them.  Now, that this had been made and delivered, Roger our Chairman inaugurated it in the art gallery.
