Eric Brownlow R.I.P
Sadly, this month we have to report the passing of a much loved Burnley and Pendle MGOC member. Eric Brownlow was an engineer by background though, for much of his life, a lecturer in the subject both here and, notably, abroad in the Middle East, but known to us for his enthusiasm, unflappable affability in the face of impending disaster and, most of all, a wonderful sense of humour and outright simple fun. Gail remembers MG trips out and the Christmas fancy dress party at the Blacksmith Arms near Rosedale Abbey when Eric arrived in Arab dress and “really entered into the spirit of fun with gusto”. We were privileged to attend his Celebration of Life Service and learned that this was only the tip of a very riotous iceberg! His son, Andrew, recounted just some of the many stories of Eric’s early travels – and escapades – including membership of an “adventure” club in Turkey, which probably involved more well lubricated planning than travel! Later, in a more family setting, he brought the same will to triumph over setbacks and have fun doing it, with his children and later with his grandchildren. This could involve cycling and running too, and woe betide anyone who didn’t realise just how good at these he actually was … But, as you can see from the picture, he was an enthusiastic motorist and the Club also remembers his exploits and Barbara particularly recalls sharing his motorhome trips abroad and admired him for travelling alone, after Sheila died, on toll roads before ANPR. But, then again, Andrew said it was Eric who decided to tow his caravan over the top of the Great St Bernard Pass rather than through the Tunnel. What could possibly go wrong …
RIP Eric, and our sincerest condolences to his family
