Brougham Hall Military Weekend (1940s)
May has been a busy month at the Burnley and Pendle. Roger tells us about our foray into the world of reenactment and Frank about the more conventional – but still alluring – classic car show at Wray. Six cars left Gisburn heading for Brougham Hall Military Weekend near Penrith in Cumbria but our first stop was for the obligatory coffee hit at Casterton Golf Club, near Kirby Lonsdale. Then, off then over the Dales and under and over the M6 – a few times – with perfect weather and unbelievable views. After passing through Tebay and Shap Village, we arrived at our destination and without anyone getting lost. There were cars parked on every spare bit of road and verge but Mark held his nerve and took us right into the event where we parked with military precision. After wandering round the great variety of exhibits we sat down for lunch, the highlight of which was Janet’s homemade scones and treacle buns (she had been up since five thirty baking them but just let herself down by nicking the butter from the Golf Club … ). Another fantastic day out. And Frank says “just got back from the Bridge House Farm show at Wray and luckily the weather was perfect – unlike the weather forecast. As well as car watching, Roger and I had coffee and custard slices in the cafe: very nice! There were three RV8 s next to one another – including mine! The other two belonged to real RV8 enthusiasts and gave me loads of very welcome tips. Barbara and Mick brought their Cyberster and there were many, many other interesting vehicles on display, including 1930s Bentleys, E-Types, Mustangs and all in excellent condition.” Excellent days out thanks to Roger and Frank and Mark and Janet.
