March Sunday Run
March’s Sunday run was initially slated as only a trip out for lunch but, for once, the met office told us that the rain gods had decided on a weekend away. And so, on a briskly cold but sunny Sunday morning, we met up at the Autisan café at Whalley Abbey for coffee and, er, warming cakes, before setting out – hoods down – on a short “opener” for the season. First came Sawley and then the climb over the hills, albeit by the somewhat different routes taken by some members, to Slaidburn. However, as the roads ultimately converged, we all ended up together on the way to Dunsop Bridge. Now, at this point, our Leader misremembered his own written directions and, instead, took the delightful and picturesque route that he had rejected as being a bit long but, as the troupe all remained in tow, was actually the better choice! Passing the rather wonderful Inn at Whitewell in the Duchy of Lancaster – visited in the past by the Late Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh – we ascended Jeffrey Hill, with its spectacular viewpoint, and descended for lunch at The Ribchester Arms. There we had an equally traditional, convivial – and rather excellent – meal in a comfortable dining room shared only with one other large group. All in all, a promising start to our MG adventures for 2024. Don’t forget to book for the Pendle Run, where we look forward to meeting friends old and new.
